ALL GUILTY PLEAS IN THE JUNE 14 2016 OCEAN VIEW BAR ROBBERY

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppThree children and a boy barely an adult could spend time in jail for a cruel robbery in Grand Turk, where a barmaid was struck in her head with a baseball bat and money was stolen.  If our juvenile center never before had long term tenants, it seems poised to now get some.  Sadly, Police today report that a 14 year old, two 17 year olds and an 18 year old all say they are guilty of the incident from June 14, 2016 when shortly after midnight, the four entered the Ocean View Bar on West Road in Grand Turk and robbed it, but not before violently attacking the female attendant.  She was struck in her head and about her arms with a bat by these boys, who now offer no challenge on the crime and have to see what a judge says about the time they will spend in prison.  The four – including Jerry Dossou and Tashawn Higgs, both 17 and Brian Blenman, 18 – were arrested and charged four days after the armed robbery, where Police say they dressed the part – all in black and took the cash register earnings and the woman’s handbag before running off.  The four will be sentenced on October 7, 2016. Since the news broke last week, Apple has issued a patch with the release of iOS 12.1.4 that fixes the security flaw that allowed callers to eavesdrop on other people. The company has also issued an official statement apologizing to “customers who were affected and all who were concerned about this security issue…” and said its “committed to continuing to earn the trust Apple customers place in us.”Apple further tried to make amends by paying a visit to Grant Thompson, the Arizona teen who first spotted the flaw, at his home. In an interview with CNBC, the teen’s mom mentioned a “high-level Apple exec” had thanked her son and mentioned he could be eligible for Apple’s bug bounty program, which offers a cash reward of up to $200,000 to researchers who find and report vulnerabilities in specific Apple software. Apple has since confirmed the company’s plans to compensate the teen, but didn’t disclosed the exact sum.  But the mea culpa may not be enough to quell critics. Last week, New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced she would open a formal investigation to find out why Apple didn’t give users a heads-up about the security flaw, and why it took the company so long to address the issue. Congressional lawmakers also penned a letter to Tim Cook requesting more information about the flaw to understand the extent to which it compromised users security. The letter, signed by Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-New Jersey), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois), chairwoman of the Digital Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, said they believe Apple has not been as transparent as this serious issue requires.iOS 13 could bring Dark Mode and more emojisThe Bloomberg report also mentions a new dark mode in the works for the iPhone, similar to what Apple rolled out for its computers with MacOS, which uses a dark color scheme instead of the traditional white. Dark mode on the iPhone would make late-night screentime a lot less jarring and would look especially good on the OLED screens of the iPhone X, XS and XS Max, which are able to produce true blacks. This feature would likely come with the update to iOS 13 in September, with an announcement coming at Apple’s Developers Conference (WWDC) in June of 2019. ios-13-iphone-xi-dark-mode-control-centerEmojipedia’s take on the 230 new emojis coming to the iPhone.  Emojipedia Also rumored to be coming in iOS 13: 230 new emojis. Some notable additions, according to the Unicode Consortium which approves these new emojis, include: people with disabilities (with a wheelchair and probing cane), interracial and gender inclusive couples, and a some pretty essential members of the animal kingdom, like the sloth, flamingo and a skunk. And finally, iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR users may not have to wait until September to get new characters on their keyboards. The Public beta of iOS 12.2 gave us a preview of the adorable giraffe, shark, owl and warthog Animojis that could be coming to these devices in the next few weeks. The iPhone X has been spotted again on the Apple Store at a discounted price. Meanwhile, the FaceTime bug refuses to go away. Here’s a roundup of the top iPhone and Apple headlines from this week’s episode of Apple Core. What that third camera could mean for the 2019 iPhone It’s only February and we’re already starting to get a pretty good sense of what the 2019 iPhones (or iPhone 11s) will look like. Multiple rumors point to a very similar design to last year’s lineup, with a smaller notch on the screen, and a possible switch to USB-C as its port of choice rather than Lightning. We’ve also heard the pricier iPhone 11 Max would have three cameras on the back. But until now, we weren’t exactly sure what that third camera was going to be used for.A recent Bloomberg report shed some light, however.  According to the report, Apple originally was said to be working on a 3D camera system for the 2019 iPhone, but then had to push it out to 2020. The new camera could scan at a range of up to 15 feet, much farther than the current True Depth camera system used on the front of the phone for FaceID, which only scans out to a range of up to 50 cm according to the report. The longer range could open up the phone to more augmented-reality features and improve portrait mode on stills and perhaps video. The third lens on this year’s iPhone, at least according to Bloomberg, would likely be used to capture a wider field of view and would only be coming to the higher-end Max model. The iPhone X makes a sneaky comebackAfter disappearing from the Apple Store without a trace in September 2018, Apple has begun selling its 10th anniversary iPhone X online again. The caveat: you’ll have to search for a refurbished model while supplies lasts. Apple began selling refurbished iPhone X’s online.  Screenshot Apple.com Apple stopped selling the iPhone X shortly after releasing last year’s iPhone lineup: the iPhone XS, XS Max and the XR, presumably to prevent the X from cannibalizing sales of its new phones. The refurbished iPhone X phones were first spotted this week by MacRumors and appear to be selling out fast. And though they are discounted from the original $999 price, the discounts aren’t that great when you compare them to the iPhone XR. An unlocked iPhone X with 64GB of storage goes for $769. That’s only $230 less than the iPhone XS with the same storage capacity, but $20 more that the 64GB iPhone XR. And even though it’s an entire year older, the 256GB model is the exact same price as the equivalent iPhone XR. The iPhone X is smaller than the XR — if that’s what you’re into — and has a dual rear camera and an OLED screen, compared to the XR’s single rear camera and LCD screen. Fitbit Charge 3 vs Versa Which is the best fitness tracker

It’s a thin band with a physical button on the side. Both have touchscreens, although the Charge 3 has a monochrome display compared to the Versa’s color LCD. You can swipe across from the sides of the display to access fitness tracking features or settings. To go back, press the side of the Charge 3. The Versa has three physical buttons that let you go back, start or stop activities, and make selections. You can change the watch faces on both in the Fitbit app. But the Charge 3 has fewer watch faces to choose from than the Versa, which has plenty of third-party options.Change the straps with this toggle on the Versa (left) and button on the Charge 3 (right). Angela Lang/CNET I found it hard to see the display on the Charge 3 in direct sunlight, regardless of the brightness setting selected (you can choose between auto or normal brightness). For me, the Versa was easier to see outdoors and you get an extra brightness setting to choose from.To change up the look of your Fitbit, each offers interchangeable straps. The Charge 3 has quick release buttons at the back, while the Versa uses a small metal bar that you have to toggle to change the strap. It’s a lot easier to swap the straps out on the Charge 3 than it is the Versa, especially if you’re looking for a quick change. Each display is coated in Gorilla Glass 3 to protect against scratches and bumps.Winner: Tie, depending on which size you preferFitness tracking features are similar on bothBoth Fitbits have an optical heart rate sensor, sleep tracking, female health tracking and water resistance to 50 meters. Neither has GPS built-in. Instead, they use connected GPS. So if you want to track your route, pace and elevation during an outdoor workout, you’ll need to take your phone with you.img-0172-2Check out your previous workouts from the Fitbit app. You can also tap into each one to see a breakdown of heart rate zones and calories. Tracking a run will also show a breakdown of your average pace. Screenshot by Lexy Savvides/CNET They both have automatic workout detection, and you can set goal-based exercises to get a notification once you pass a set distance, time or calorie goal. The Charge 3 lets you put six different workout shortcuts on the exercise screen, while the Versa gives you space for seven shortcuts. You can choose from 19 workout types from the Fitbit app (run, hike, walk, swim, bike, spinning, pilates, interval workout, golf, elliptical, weights, workout, treadmill, stairclimber, yoga, tennis, kickboxing, circuit training, martial arts, bootcamp). Both give you reminders to move, prompting you to complete a number of steps an hour to “win”.I found the fabric and plastic Fitbit straps fairly comfortable to work out with during a run or sweaty Pilates session. Thanks to its larger screen, the Versa gives you more metrics from your workout once you complete your exercise routine. It’s also the only one that lets you go back and view your past few workouts from the watch face, rather than diving into the Fitbit app itself. The Versa has lots of third-party apps available (which we’ll cover in the next section) which makes it easier if you prefer to track your workout in a different app. During workouts, I found the Charge 3 often gave a higher reading on my heart rate than the Versa. During an outdoor run, it said my maximum heart rate was over 200 beats per minute. From using previous heart rate trackers and smartwatches (and comparing with the Versa), running at the same intensity on the same route never gave me a max heart rate over 190.The Versa comes with the Coach app. A bit like a personal trainer on your wrist, it runs you through a sequence of moves with quick visual cues on the screen. It’s a nice extra if you want to squeeze in a quick workout. For similar workouts on the Charge 3, you’ll need to use the Fitbit Coach app on your phone.Fitbit metrics don’t sync to Apple Health, so keep this in mind if you are an iOS user who likes to consolidate data in one app.Winner: VersaBoth have smartwatch features, but the Versa does moreIt’s easy to get notifications mirrored from your phone on each Fitbit, and they both work with iOS and Android. That being said, you’ll only be able to respond to notifications if it’s tied to Android. You can customize quick responses to messages from the Fitbit app.Fitbit Pay is a mobile wallet that lets you tap to pay with NFC at compatible terminals. It’s only available if you buy the special edition of both (which does come at a premium).fitbit-charge-versa-4 Angela Lang/CNET The Versa is the only one that can store music. It has space for around 300 songs, but the process to get those tunes onto the watch is cumbersome. You need to download a desktop app then make sure the Versa and your computer are on the same Wi-Fi network to start the transfer. If you prefer a streaming service, the only two options available are Pandora and Deezer, as long as you have a subscription. There is a third-party Spotify app available, but it is only to control playback from your phone. There are also many more third-party apps available on the Versa than there were when it first launched. Here’s a list of some of our favorites. The Charge 3 doesn’t have third-party apps at the time of writing. As the Versa was released in April 2018, a new edition of the watch potentially called Fitbit Versa 2 may be around the corner. We don’t have any insider information, but we’d love to see on-board GPS and Fitbit Pay integrated into the new version.Winner: VersaBattery life is stellar on the Charge 3There’s no contest here. You’ll get around six to seven full days on the Charge 3 before you need to juice it up, while the Versa gives you around four full days. Each has a proprietary clip-in charger. If you’re coming from the Charge 2, the cable for the Charge 3 is different.Winner: Charge 3What about price? At the time of writing, the Charge 3 costs $150 for the regular edition and $20 more gets you the special edition with Fitbit Pay and extra bands. The Versa is $200 and the special edition, also with Fitbit Pay, costs $30 more. Since the Versa was released almost a year ago, it has been discounted several times to a price that’s pretty comparable to the Charge 3 (the cheapest we’ve seen it in the past is $90).So comparing the Charge 3 and the Versa on price isn’t always straightforward, as you can get them for around the same price at certain times of the year.Winner: TieWhich is the best Fitbit for me?If you want Fitbit’s top of the line fitness tracker with a heart rate monitor and without too many bells and whistles, get the Charge 3. The battery will last you a long time and you’ll get notifications mirrored from your phone. If you’re looking for a smartwatch with a big screen, more robust fitness tracking on the watch itself, and the added bonus of a personal trainer on your wrist, get the Versa. MS Dhoni was given out rightly here is why

first_imgThis angle clearly shows the bails being broken before Dhoni makes his creaseiplt20.comThe Indian Premier League (IPL) Final turned out as just the type of classic it was expected to be. Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma found a way to defend just nine runs in the last over of the innings and secured their fourth title. But the biggest talking point that emerged from the match was not the individual brilliance of any one player but the decision of the third umpire to give Mahendra Singh Dhoni run out at a crucial stage of the game. There is an intense debate on social media about whether Dhoni’s bat was behind the line when the bails were dislodged or not. The problem with making the decision was the fact that one angle showed the former India captain clearly not having his bat behind the line when the bails get dislodged while the other was blocked by a fielder. After deliberating for a long time, the TV umpire eventually decided that Dhoni was out. This wicket, arguably, turned the match in MI’s favour. Many CSK fans have argued that the bails need to be completely dislodged before the batsman makes the crease for him to be run out, and since the bails were only partially removed from the stumps at the when MSD was short of his ground, the umpire should have adjudged him not out. Mumbai Indians with the trophyTwitter/Mumbai IndiansWas the decision right? So, was Dhoni really out? Or, was he wrongly adjudged dismissed? Let’s look at the rules first. The MCC Law on run out (38.1) says, “Either batsman is out Run out, except as in 38.2, if, at any time while the ball is in play, he/she is out of his/her ground and his/her wicket is fairly put down by the action of a fielder even though No ball has been called, except in the circumstances of 38.2.2.2, and whether or not a run is being attempted.”So, the key words there are “wicket is fairly put down.” However, this seemed too vague, so the ICC which can frame the rules of the game, decided to make things clearer. The rules state that the bails have to be ‘broken’ before the batsman grounds his bat behind the crease to achieve a run out.So, bails being broken is important. Some people have a misconception that the bails need to be completely removed from the stumps. But if one has been watching cricket over the years, he would realise that umpires mainly look at when the bails are disturbed and not necessarily when they are completely detached. One of the angles of Dhoni’s run out clearly shows that his bat was short of the crease when the bails were lifted. This, by the standards of cricket, is sufficient for them to be considered broken. So, it is clear, Dhoni was out and CSK fans cannot crib about it. Let’s give credit to both teams for putting up a great show and hope that similar excitement awaits us in the World Cup as well.last_img read more

DPS Troopers Assisting In Effort To Locate Thousands Of Missing CPS Children

first_imgTexas Department of Family & Protective ServicesSpecial agents with the Department of Public Safety are being used to locate an estimated 2,800 children who have been deemed by the state as at high-risk for abuse.  The DPS began assisting Child Protective Services in their efforts following a fiery meeting at the state capitol and a legislative ultimatum. As heard on Texas Public RadioPatrick Crimmins with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the group who oversees CPS has confirmed that fewer than two dozen DPS special agents are working in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, going door-to-door to find these kids, taking a picture on their phone, and sending it to a CPS caseworker.“I mean it’s kind of a welfare check kind of thing is what it is for the most part, but it is on a very limited basis, it’s only going to be Dallas, Houston and San Antonio,” Crimmins explains.Crimmins says DPS special agents are just there to “put eyes” on these children and lack the necessary jurisdiction to investigate children’s claims of abuse at this level unless they believe a crime has occurred. The emergency relief follows a tense hearing at the state capitol on Wednesday where senate lawmakers like Houston State Senator John Whitmire demanded the new head of CPS, Hank Whitman, take immediate action to find these at-risk children that no caseworker has seen in months.“Excuse me, you just said that they haven’t been seen, well hell they may die before you get there,” Whitmire told Whitman.Kate Murphy with the non-profit Texans Care For Children calls the effort a temporary fix of a much bigger problem because even after DPS special agents have located these children an individual CPS caseworker still has to conduct a follow-up visit with hundreds of families.“I think we need to start working right away with some real fixes to investigations, including hiring more caseworkers for investigations and paying higher salaries to stop turnover,” Murphy says. The head of CPS has requested the legislature allow his agency to hire an additional 550 caseworkers before the start of the 2017 legislative session.State lawmakers have demanded the head of Child Protective Services turn over his plan for turning the agency around by the end of Thursday.Copyright 2016 KSTX-FM.
