‘Putu Remains Committed to MDA’

first_imgThe management of the Putu Iron Ore Mining Company (PIOM) has reassured the government and people of Liberia that it remains committed to the implementation of the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) it signed with government. The PIOM management stated that although in the last few months its activities were reduced it did not close down its operations, as had been rumored, according to a press release issued yesterday. The scale down in operations, according to the company’s CEO Christian Masurenko, was attributed to the Ebola outbreak. He pledged that PIOM will continue to meet its obligations to government and the communities within its concession area.Mr. Masurenko said he was giving the assurance because the scale-down in the company’s operations in the last few months has been “misinterpreted as closure.”The PIOM CEO stressed that unforeseen circumstances have negatively impacted the company’s operations resulting in delays in the implementation of its ventures. The press release made specific reference to the Ebola outbreak which it said continues to hamper normal working activities in the country, and also the steep decline in the world market price for iron ore which is impacting iron ore investments not only in Liberia but worldwide. With the level of progress attained in combating the EVD, coupled with the Liberian government’s efforts to stimulate the economy in particular, the mining sector, PIOM anticipates resuming operations in the shortest possible time, said the press statement.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgWith Open Week about to start the Dunfanaghy Links course has had a much needed trim and the fairways have been widened considerably. The course is looking in superb shape and the greens are playing true. You can book your slot on-line and I will put up the list of competitions on Face book. There are also flyers available in the clubhouse. The unbelievably great weather has put a strain on all courses. Just look at the Open as that course was like dust, but believe it or not the rough helped protect our course from drying out. Lead ups to the tee boxes show signs of drying out but the course in the main is good. Greens are super thanks to the foresight of adding a watering system years ago. Anyway down to the results and Diarmuid Logue took the honours in last Wednesday’s competition with – yes you guessed it Gerard Harkin taking second on BOT from Tim Purdy who is just back from the land of the pharaohs. Robert McElhinney won the Gross this week with 32 points. I think Gerard Harkin deliberately comes in second to see what my comments are.Saturday saw Chris Monroe cruising home with 39 points to push James Sweeney into second place. Maurice o’Reilly won the gross and Mal Johnston managed to pick up third place on BOT. Sunday was the Centenary Cup GOY competition and despite Gerard McGinley trying to knock out the competition – yes really with a stray ball at 15 tee box just missing the orange man – Gerard managed a really superb round of 63 net. A truly brilliant score on the day as there was some wind to content with. Gerard is not long back into golf after a break away from Dunfanaghy for some years. Welcome back Gerard and what a way to announce your arrival.Second place was decided on BOT with Cornelius McMullan managing to pip Paul Burton for the place.
